The Deer Parks WMA is located 25 miles north of Idaho Falls in east Idaho’s Jefferson County. From Interstate 15, take exit 143 (Sage Junction) and drive 12 miles east on State Highway 33 until you see the Menan Buttes to the south. Turn south on East Butte Road where a sign indicates “Sportsman’s Access, Menan Buttes” and proceed straight. You will pass between the Menan Buttes; at the stop sign turn left (south), drive ½ mile to the WMA headquarters. At the end of March, a flood of waterfowl fills Butte Slough, providing a welcome chance to get outside after winter and view wildlife. Almost any species of waterfowl found in southern and eastern Idaho can be found here, including redbreasted mergansers and trumpeter swans. In the spring, migrating songbirds and raptors fill the cottonwood forests, making Deer Parks a hot spot for birding. During any time of year, the gentle landscape is an open invitation for nonmotorized travel, whether walking, horseback riding, or cross-country skiing. In the fall, secret coves and backwaters of the Snake River provide nice places for waterfowl hunting.
