Carolina covers a total land area of 2359 acres. The area is composed of primarily forest cover (evergreen 960 acres, deciduous 456 acres), wetlands (280 acres) and agricultural lands (134 acres) making up the balance. The DFW maintains approximately 42 management fields which are intensively managed by the DFW for the purpose of increasing food and cover for game and non-game wildlife. Management practices include planting of food and cover crops, maintaining periodic mowing of brush fields, and mowing of pasture grasslands. this diverse area includes several hundred feet of frontage along the Pawcatuck River including forested, shrub and emergent wetlands. The American Fish Culture parcel, added in 1995, contains an active state trout hatchery operated by DFW.
