Logan Conservation Area is in Lincoln County, five miles north of Silex. The 1,798-acre area includes 1,417 acres of timber, 350 acres of open fields, 29 acres of lakes/ponds, and a creek.The Conservation Department acquired this property from William R. Logan in 1968 in part with Pittman-Robertson funds from the federal excise tax on sporting arms and ammunition.The rolling topography of the area represents a transition zone between Mississippi River hills and upland prairie. Boulder and rock outcrops are commonly found here.Timber on the area varies from bottomland hardwoods to typical upland oak-hickory species. Bottomland species include cottonwoods, sycamore, maple, hackberry, elm, walnut, and butternut. The upland regions contain several species of white oak, red oak, and hickory groups. Signs of past timber grazing and burns are evident.Management of the William R. Logan Conservation Area focuses on providing food and cover for the area's abundant wildlife. Tree, shrub, food plot, and native grass plantings increase habitat diversity.
