Looking for a place off the beaten path? Try the Smith Mountain Cooperative Wildlife Management Area. This property offers outdoor enthusiasts the opportunity to hunt, fish, hike, view wildlife and enjoy vistas overlooking beautiful Smith Mountain Lake.
Located in portions of Bedford and Pittsylvania Counties, the 4996 acre Smith Mountain property is owned by Appalachian Power Company and is cooperatively managed by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. The area is almost entirely forested. Elevations range from 800 feet to over 2000 feet. The area’s western boundary adjoins Smith Mountain Lake and includes ten miles of lake shoreline. Protected in perpetuity by a conservation easement held jointly by the Virginia Outdoors Foundation and the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, this scenic and natural wildlife habitat area will remain available for public use for many years to come.
Deer, turkey, squirrels, bear and raccoon are the primary species hunted on the area.

Hunting on Sunday is allowed on Smith Mountain Cooperative Wildlife Management Area. A letter granting Sunday hunting permission (PDF) is available here for downloading and printing. The hunter’s name should be written in the space provided. The permission letter must be in possession of the hunter when hunting on Sunday on this area.
Sunday Hunting Rules
The 2014 General Assembly enacted legislation that allows hunting on Sunday on private lands with written permission of the landowner and under certain other conditions. A permission letter for Sunday hunting on the Smith Mountain Cooperative Wildlife Management Area is provided above. After downloading and printing the permission letter, the hunter’s name should be written in the space provided. The permission letter must be in possession of the hunter when hunting on Sunday on the area.
