The SCDNR Wildlife Management Area program began leasing the Marsh tract from Marsh Furniture Company in 1991. After deciding to divest of the property, the company contacted SCDNR in hopes of selling the land for conservation. SCDNR purchased the tract on December 28, 2005 with help from the Heritage Land Trust Fund and a grant from the South Carolina Conservation Bank. Marsh WMA/HP consists of 8,660 acres and is located in Marion County, SC. An extensive road system provides public and management access throughout the tract. Portions of the property may also be accessed from the Great Pee Dee River or Catfish Creek, both of which form the majority of this tracts western boundary. The main entrance to Marsh WMA/HP is located off of SC secondary hwy. 9 approximately 7.2 miles north of Gresham, SC. Off of Hwy 9 turn onto Brothers Rd., turn right onto Tapestry Rd., and turn left at stop sign onto Murray Rd. Continue following Murray Rd. as it turns to dirt. Informational kiosk is located approximately 3.65 miles after turning onto Murray Rd. Access point off of secondary SC Hwy 9 is marked with a brown, reflective sign. Marsh WMA contains several habitat types, including red river floodplain (Great Pee Dee River) habitats such as bottomland hardwoods, isolated freshwater wetlands and extensive pine and mixed pine-hardwood forests. Marsh WMA/HP is managed to provide quality natural resources dependent recreational opportunities. Hunting, fishing, boating, birding, hiking, biking, and wildlife viewing are among the more popular activities enjoyed by visitors. Primitive camping is available at the designated camping area only located adjacent to the informational kiosk.
