The state of Kansas Purchased a total of 581.65 acres in July, 1931. Much of the construction of the 140 acre lake was done by the Works Progress Administration and the Civilian Conservation Corps. A stone shelter house was added to the lake in the 1960's
The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks manage a total of 581 acres. The area is situated on the eastern edge of the Flint Hills region of Kansas. The 441 acre wildlife area is dominated by tall grass native prairie with small wooded draws interspersed. The lake is 140 acres and is fairly clear most times. The area includes primitive campgrounds, a boat ramp, fishing piers, a pit toilet and a shelter house. There is a small trail system that runs along the southeast side of the lake, ideal for any wildlife viewing.
