Forest provides for both small game and deer hunting on its 85,000 acres. Miles of trout waters and many lakes/reservoirs support warm water fishing. Primitive camping, hiking, horseback riding, bicycling, and snowmobiling are available. Day hiking opportunities abound on hundreds of miles of roads and trails. About 39 miles of the Appalachian Trail are on the Michaux State Forest located just north of the Maryland state line. Always let someone know when and where you will be hiking. Leave no trace of your activities. Trails within the forest are open to mountain biking and horseback riding. Most trails are kept clear over the summer. Primitive campers spending no more than one night at a campsite typically do not need a camping permit, with certain exceptions. Primitive camping is carry in, carry out.
