About This Lease
Driving DirectionsFrom Birch Tree, take Highway 99 south 6 miles. HighlightsLike most of the Ozarks, this area experienced an era of timber exploitation during the early 20th century. This property was Like most of the Ozarks, the area experienced an era of exploitative timber harvests during the early 20th century. The property was purchased by Kerr-McGee Chemical Corp. in the 1930's and was managed with selective harvests and some pine plantings. The area was sold to The Nature Conservancy (TNC) in 1992 as part of a larger land sale. TNC sold the property to the Department in 1992. Since that time management has consisted of oak regeneration harvests, salvage harvests due to wildfires and windstorms, a 400 acre control burn for woodland restoration, and selective thinnings. At present most of the area consists of over-crowded stands of oak, pine, and oak-pine saw timber. Almost all the acreage is classified as woodland but there is very little woodland structure due to high tree stocking and the absence of fire.
