About This AreaThe McGee Family Conservation Area opened for public use on Saturday, September 15, 2011, providing additional hunting, fishing and hiking opportunities in Northwest Missouri.  The almost 1,000-acre upland area is south of Plattsburg and can be accessed off Route C or County Road 240.  In the area's northeast corner there is frontage on both sides of the Little Platte River.  Kansas City businessman Thomas F. McGee, Jr., who died in 2010, bequeathed his farm in Clinton County to the Missouri Department of Conservation so others could enjoy nature.  The area's rolling hills were primarily in pasture for most of the last century.  Long-term plans call for coverting upland fescue pastures to more wildlife freindly habitat such as row crops and native warm season grasses.  White-tailed deer and wild turkeys are seen regularly on the area, especially in the wooded areas near the Little Platte River.  The area has several farm ponds, some spawning runs up the river if water flow is adequate.  A formal dedication of the area was held in September, 2011, with McGee family members, conservation leaders and community members.  The ceremony was in appreciation for the generous gift made by Thomas F. McGee, Jr. to all Missourians who enjoy the outdoors.
