HighlightsThis area is mostly prairie with some cropland. About This AreaProvidence Prairie CA is 197 acres of native prairie, brushy draws, and cropland located in northern Lawrence County. The prairie on the area represents only a small remnant of a much larger tallgrass prairie ecosystem that once dominated the landscape. The area still contains a wide variety of native prairie plant species including a showy wildlflower display during the spring and summer months. MDC staff manages the prairie with prescribed fire to promote a diverse prairie plant community and haying to help control woody brush invasion. Additionally, large trees that have grown up in wet areas and were historically not present on the area have been removed. Recreational opportunities include bird watching for a variety of grassland bird species and fair to good hunting for rabbit and quail.
