About This AreaSwift Ditch Access is located in New Madrid County, seven miles south of Sikeston near the junction of Interstate 55 and Highway 80. The area can be accessed from county gravel road 702, off Route V.The Conservation Department acquired this area in 1997 with the purchase of a 146 acre farm from a private landowner who had the ground in row crops. This area is predominately a wetland habitat with heavy, poorly drained soils to light sandy loams on the upland sites.Low profile levees and water control structures have been installed for the restoration and protection of the wetlands habitat, including water quality, erosion control, and perennial cover for wildlife. The variety of tree, shrub, and plant life provides diversity for wildlife.
