About This Lease
Location: 6 miles south of Mt. Carmel; along the Wabash River Description: Beall Woods contains one of the oldest dedicated nature preserves in Illinois. Under the National Natural Landmark system, it is known as "Forest of the Wabash." The great size and height of the trees is awe-inspiring. The forest contains a great variety of trees, with eleven types of oaks and six types of hickory. The only open land, toward the southwest, is maintained for campgrounds and day-use. The lake lies east of the campground. The Park Office is on the west boundary. Total Acres: 630 Huntable Acres: 516 Water Acres: 14 Nature Preserve: 310 Timber Acres: 530 Legal Game Species: Deer (Archery Only) Other Facilities Available: Approximately 310 acres on the east side of the Site has been declared a Nature Preserve by IDNR. Beall Woods is the biggest and best remaining example of the immense forests which occurred along the Wabash. Unique features include upland and bottomland forest and riverine communities once typical of the bottomland section of the Wabash Border Natural Division. A Visitors' Center, located in the center of the park, offers exhibits and educational displays explaining the natural history of the area. Fishing and boating (electric trolling motors only), picnic areas; hiking trails and camping are also available. Area Regulations: This site is open to archery deer hunting. No other game may be taken. Hunting is permitted in those areas posted as open to hunting. Restricted areas are marked by signs. 1.In addition to having appropriate licenses, stamps, and species permits, all hunters must obtain a free Site Windshield Card/Harvest Report Form. These cards are available online at www.dnr.illinois.gov . Navigate to “Hunting/Trapping” and then “Public Hunting Areas” to print these Windshield Cards. Hunters will be required to return to this website prior to February 15th each year to record harvest information. Failure to submit data will result in loss of hunting privileges for the following year. 2.The Windshield Card must be displayed on the dashboard of the vehicle used while hunting at the Site. Hunters must park in designated areas. No off-road vehicle use is allowed. 3.Archery hunting continues during the statewide firearm deer seasons. Blaze orange clothing requirements are in place during the firearm deer seasons. 4.Permanent tree stands are prohibited. Portable stands are allowed and may be left unattended overnight during the period September 15 through January 31. Only one stand is allowed per hunter. Each stand must be legibly marked with the owner's name, address, and telephone number when left unattended. No nails, screws, or other devices are allowed to pierce trees. 5.It is unlawful to remove or injure any plant or part thereof on state property.
