About This Lease
Driving DirectionsFrom the Highway 136/Route FF junction in Princeton, take Route FF north 1 mile to Fernwood Place, the first gravel road going west (left). Take Fernwood Place west 2 miles to the area parking lot. HighlightsThis area includes 40 acres of freshwater marsh and 15 acres of wet-mesic prairie. Chloe Lowry Marsh is one of the highest quality natural marshes in the state containing six Missouri species of conservation concern. About This AreaThis Natural Area was purchased from the Kauffman family in 1992. It is named after the late Chloe (Kauffman) Lowry, beloved aunt and wife of the late Frank Lowry, a prominent local business man. Mrs. Lowry had a great interest in the outdoors, specifically in birds. This area is one of the best examples of the few remaining natural freshwater marshes in the state. At least six Missouri plant species of conservation concern occur here and the area is either home to, or provides migratory habitat for a variety of birds, mammals and amphibians. The Department manages the area primarily with prescribed fire. This is a good area for birding and has an old railroad berm bisecting the area that provides good walking access from the parking lot to the marsh units.
