Butterfield Trail SRA is characterized by major habitat areas consisting of 100% forest and shrub land. Spring creek flows through the tract. *New this year, hunters will be required to obtain a Windshield Permit for the following programs - Squirrel, Deer Archery, Fall Turkey Archery. These permits are available on-line at http://dnr.state.il.us/lands/landmgt/programs/windshieldcard. You must go back on-line to report your effort and harvest by February 15th, even if you did not hunt. Failure to do so will result in loss of hunting privileges the next year.
SITE REGULATIONS:
Squirrel hunting is form August 1 to September 30. Reopens after archery deer season closes, to end of statewide season. Statewide bag limits apply. Black powder muzzleloaders and shotguns may be used for squirrel hunting. The Red Squirrel, a protected species is found on the area. DO NOT SHOOT this small tree squirrel!
Deer (Bow) hunting. Statewide bag limits apply. No permanent tree stands are allowed. Hunters are required to remove portable tree stands daily. No spikes, nails or screws may be placed in trees.
Deer (Firearm) hunting. Statewide bag limits apply. No permanent tree stands allowed, stands must not pierce the bark of trees. A site specific permit must be obtained during the spring lottery. Sign in and sign out and phone in your harvest.
Deer (Muzzleloader). Second half of the Muzzleloader season only. Statewide bag limits apply. No permanent tree stands allowed, stands must not pierce the bark of trees. A site specific permit must be obtained during the spring lottery. Sign in and sign out and phone in your harvest.
Furbearer trapping is by permit. Dog proof traps are required.
Turkey (Spring) Site specific permit. Sign in and sign out, phone in your harvest.
Turkey (Fall Archery) phone in harvest, statewide regulations apply.
Turkey (Spring) (Youth) Site Specific permit. Sign in and sign out, phone in your harvest.
