About This AreaBlackjack Access contains a unique complex of grassland, savanna, and woodland. Small glade communities can be found with stunted post and blackjack oak adapted to dry, shallow soil conditions. A few unique bluffs are located along the Sac River on the northwest edge of Blackjack Savanna. Restoration efforts are underway, including tree removal and prescribed burning. The Sac River bordering this area is important habitat for numerous species of freshwater mussels. The Pink mucket and the Black sandshell are of conservation concern in Missouri that live in flowing waters of large streams among gravel and cobble. The principal cause of decline has been habitat alteration from dam construction, channelization, and dredging.
