About This AreaThis property was donated to the Department by the Farmers Home Administration (FmHA) in 1992. Until acquired by FmHA in 1988, most of the area was farmed in milo, wheat, and soybeans.With Department ownership most of the open farmland has been returned to a native forest condition. Giant cane grows along the south side of Birdslash Ditch. Approximately 165 acres of the area is forested. Twenty-seven acres in two wetlands were never cleared for agriculture and retains large mature trees. The state champion overcup oak is near the center of the property. The wetlands support populations of four listed plant species including corkwood (Leitneria floridana), strawberry bush (Euonymus americanus), blunt mountain mint (Pycnanthemum muticum), and water oak (Quercus nigra). Birdslash Ditch runs across the property. It is the only permanent water source on the property and is periodically dammed by beavers.
